GIRL WHO MADE ME QUIT
SMOKING NOW A DOCTOR
Off from both our work Friday afternoon, I and my second child, Josa Bernadette, shared simple dinner in a Yoshinaya outlet in SM North.
It is seldom that we get together like this because she is deep in her work as a Doctor specializing in Pathology in a major hospital in Quezon City.
This girl drastically changed my life when two days before her birthday 20 years ago, she asked me to give her a special gift – quit smoking.
At that time, I was a newly-elected Governor who was smoking three packs of Philip Morris every day.
What father could refuse to gift his little girl on her birthday?
The following day, Sept. 21, 1998, I quit smoking and not a single stick has touched my lips ever since.
Looking back, I believe it was the best birthday gift I have ever given.
Finally, six years later, I decided to totally give up alcohol too.
At 64, I feel good with a BP of 110 over 70.
No major health problems except for a bout with pneumonia in November last year, a recurring back muscle pain and a chronic sinusitis.
I still climb mountains, the last being the April Mt. Apo climb.
I thank this little girl for the better health that I have now.
