Buguias, Benguet – After an overnight trip from Davao City by plane and car which took about 12 hours, I arrived in the vegetable producing town of Buguias at 9 a.m. today.
The event that I will be witnessing is the first harvest of potatos whose seeds were imported from Prince Edward Island in Canada by the Universal Robina Corporation.
This is a collaborative program between URC and the Department of Agriculture started two years ago as part of the potato industry development program.
The aim is to improve the productivity of potato farmers by introducing new high yieldinh varieties.
This project illustrates how long it would take to institute reforms and improvements in the agriculture sector.
And this is just potatos.
People who expect Philippine agriculture, neglected and wanting of government support for decades, to improve overnight should u
realize that there is no magic or secret formula.
All that is needed after the desired result is identifed is pure and simple farmer’s common sense, hardwork and perseverance.
