Game Changer! New Organic Pesticide For Banana, Vegetables

On Friday, I joined other high value crops farmers in witnessing the introduction and launching of a new plant-based Pesticide and Insecticide which could boost the marketing potentials of Philippine Cavendish Banana and improve the safety standards for vegetables like Broccoli, Cauliflower and Cabbage.
Introduced in the country through its commercial brand “Plant Shield,” this could be a game changer in the Cavendish Banana Industry where many exports in the past were rejected because of the high chemical residue level.
During the launching at the Martinez Resort in Mua-an, Kidapawan City, “Plant Shield” was introduced as a pesticide and insecticide which has Matrine as its active ingredient, an alkaloid found in plants from the genus Sophora.
Even before it was commercially introduced, I had actually used Plant Shield along with AMO Foliar Fertilizer in our Soybeans Farm and found it to be effective.
More than that, I believe that the use of Organic Insecticide and Pesticide, along with Organic Foliar Fertilizer and Animal Manure should be the direction which Philippine Agriculture should take for many reasons, to include:
1. Environmental Protection. Studies showed that the massive use of toxic chemicals to control pests and weeds in the Banana Plantations of the Davao Region had resulted in toxic residues in the Davao Gulf;
2. Human Health. Indiscriminate and massive spraying of toxic pesticides and fungicides on vegetables, especially those vulnerable to worm and fungal attacks, could affect human health;
3. Economic Considerations. The use of plant-based pesticide and insecticide and seaweed-based or animal manure sourced organic fertilizer could save our farmers a lot of money and free them from dependence on chemicals manufactured by foreign companies.
Right now, I am already using Chicken Manure and Slurry, mixed with a small amount of inorganic fertilizer, AMO Foliar Fertilizer and Plant Shield insecticide and pesticide in our Soybeans and Sorghum Farms.
