Upland Hybrid Rice Variety planted in Bukidnon Tribal Land survives El Niño by “sleeping” for 80 days, coming back to life when the rains fell.
The Tatag TH82 (NSIC Rc350H) was planted on Feb. 8 in the Tagoloan Tribal land in Malaybalay, Bukidnon as part of my Upland Rice Farming Advocacy.
With the support of Seedworks Phils., distributor of TH82, Dept.of Agriculture Region 10, the BUKTAMACO tribal farmers cooperative, the program was launched to prove that Upland Rice Farming could address poverty and hunger in the rural areas.
By April, however, the Demo Farm was devastated by 3 months of El Niño.
When the rains fell in May, the brown stumps of rice came back to life.
Today, Aug. 22, a total of 194 days after planting, the tribal farmers harvested an estimated 2.22 metric tons per hectare.
The harvest is not much by common standards but what makes this amazing was the discovery of a drought resilient rice variety.
This could be the first documented case of “Rice Hibernation.”
