As we prepare for the launching of the Small Ruminants Genetic Improvement Program this year, I have asked my support crew to design and build housing facilities and sheds made out of Bamboo.
The decision to use Bamboo as the primarily material in the construction of these facilities was in support for our advocacy to promote the Bamboo Industry which is getting focus from the Department of Agriculture under Sec. Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and Undersecretary DV Savellano.
The Bamboo Program of the DA is now lodged with the office of Usec. Savellano, a development which I very much appreciate because it was during my term as Secretary of Agriculture when a Department Administrative Order was issued identifying Bamboo as an Agricultural Product.
The Bamboo Sheep and Goat House that we will build was designed by a young engineer, Renaldo Borda, and it empjhasizes the benefits of natural materials to the raising of ruminants in confined areas.
The roof made out of Bamboo topped by GI sheets to ensure that there will be no drips during the rainy season will provide a cooler temperature in the goat house.
Bamboo slats would be used for the pen divisions and flooring while the posts will be made out of the poles of Giant Bamboo.
There is actually no need to treat the Bamboos to be used in the Goat House because in my experience, wood weevils cannot withstand the strong smell of Goat or Sheep urine.
Using Bamboo as the base materials in constructing goat and sheep houses and sheds would make goat and sheep raising in confined and elevated buildings more affordable for the local farmer.
