Sorghum and Soybeans farming is attracting a lot of landowners and farmers in Alamada and Mlang, North Cotabato, sites of demo farms for both crops.
Reeling from their losses because of the unpredictable buying price of their produce, especially Kalabasa, farmers are now drawn to Sorghum and Soybeans because of a ready market and a guaranteed buying price.
Yesterday, plowing operations were undertaken even with a slight drizzle and fogs.
Sorghum Production is spearheaded by a young agriculture company, Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc. headed by former Senator Panfilo Lacson.
SAAV Inc., where I am the Fields Operations Officer, provides seeds for its partner-farmers with a buy-back agreement.
With an 11 to 12 percent protein, Sorghum is an ideal material, along with corn, for poultry and livestock feeds.
Soybeans Production, on the other hand, is a project which I personally lead.
Increased local Soya Production could reduce the country’s dependence on imported Soya whose high price drives up the cost of feeds.
Initial indications show that Sorghum and Soybeans grow well in Cotabato and other parts of Mindanao.
With a guaranteed farm gate price and a ready market ensured by the Buy-Back Scheme, more farmers are now showing keen interest in adopting these new crops.
The success of the Sorghum and Soybeans Program in North Cotabato could boost poultry and livestock production in the near future as the sufficient supply could bring feeds prices down.
