Hybrid Vigor! 600-Year-Old Breed Boosts ‘Manok Pinoy’

An old Oriental chicken breed, believed to have been brought to the Southern Philippines by Islamic Missionaries from East Asia over 600 years ago, serves as the foundation blood of the upgraded free-range chicken breed I developed 15 years ago.
The Asian Aseel, locally known as “Parawakan,” “Jolo” and “Basilan,” had been preserved and perpetuated by Bangsamoro families in the Southern Philippines for both game and food.
Resilient, hardy and resistant to common poultry diseases, the “Parawakan” has proven to be an outstanding breeding material in producing an upgraded free-range chicken strain, Manok Pinoy, which I accidecanlly developed in 2010.
After receiving a set of Heritage Hens from an American breeder-friend, I used the “Parawakan” as the male side in the breeding program which produced what I considered as perfect specimen of a free-range chicken for both egg and meat production.
Today, the “Manok Pinoy” has become a byword among free-range chicken breeders.
To maintain the line, I have kept and perpetuated a line of the Aseels which I obtained from several breeders in the Bangsamoro communities.
Today in my farm, there are many lanky and round-bodied young “Parawakan” cockerels and pullets just roaming freely and waiting for their turn to continue the process of producing a free-range chicken strain with hybrid vigor.
