Salinas, CA – I’m in California now for a week-long engagement and in my free time today, I visited the Outdoor Section of Walmart to check on some seeds.
There was an array of seeds, from Giant Sunflowers to Sweet Carrots, to choose from.
In America, farmers do not wait for government to distribute seeds so they could plant vegetables.
You could order all kinds of seeds online or go to supermarkets like Walmart and Lowes to pick packets of vegetables at $1.
Most seed companies in the Philippines rely on the small agri stores as their outlets which are not often visited by housewives.
I know of only one company, Toto Barcelona’s Harbest which had aggressively established outlets in some supermarkets.
Perhaps, it would be a good idea for the Department of Agriculture to work with the Dept of Trade and Industry and encourage big supermarkets like SM to carry agricultural items, especially seeds.
It should include planting pots and trays, garden soil, coco peat, foliar fertilizer and most of all instructional materials on how to plant and propagate.
This would boost the Urban Gardening Program of the DA and promote food self-reliance among Filipino families, especially those in the population centers.
