As boys growing up in the farm, we were taught to identify edible wild leafy plants and gather these for our viand.
The 4-Leaf Native Clover or “Apat-Apat,” native Spinach or “Kulitis,” Jute Leaves or “Tagabang” and “Saluyot,” Native Water Spinach or “Kangkong” and Sesille Joyweed or “Lupo” were among the most common leafy greens which we gathered.
Of all these, “Lupo” (sn: Althernanthera sessilis) ang isa sa pinakapaborito ko.
Hinahalo ito sa Monggo at Dilis and it makes a delicious dish.
It is good for Liver Health too as medical researches show that “Lupo” aids in healing sickly liver and stabilizes Diabetes, as well.
These greens used to be found growing in the wild until the advent of “modern farming” when herbicides were introduced to control weeds.
Seldom could one find “Apat-apat” or “Lupo” nowadays.
In my farm, however, I discovered an area where “Lupo” and Wild “Kangkong” were growing.
Yesterday, I harrowed a low-lying portion of the farm where I will set up plots to propagate “Lupo” and Wild “Kangkong.”
More than just propagating and perpetuating these wild leafy greens, I will also relive the memories of my youth when nature gifted us with beneficial plants in abundance.
Gusto ko rin matikman ng mga apo ko ang lasa ng “Lupo” na may Dilis at Monggo at Adobong Native Kangkong.
