I, Farm Boy! Sorghum Silage-Making On-Line Demo Next Week

As we prepare for the harvest of the Sorghum which we planted in a 2.3-hectare demonstration and research farm in Makilala, North Cotabato next week, I asked cattle fattening expert and outstanding OFW Arnel Corpuz to conduct an actual demonstration on how to prepare silage using Sorghum stalks and leaves.
Sorghum which produces grains for feeds and food is a unique crop because even at harvest time, its stalks and leaves remain green making these ideal for silage production.
Silage-making is the process of turning forage like Corn, Napier and other materials into preserved food for Cattle, Carabao, Goats and Sheep.
Through a technique which keeps out air from the storage bag or storage bin, the silage could be preserved for up to five years.
I just recently opened a silage bag which was filled with Sorghum Stalks and Leaves in January 2021 and we are now feeding this to our dairy goats.
One hectare of Sorghum could yield stalks and leaves which if processed into silage could feed 20 heads of cattle for one year.
The sharing of the silage-making technique is intended to educate our farmers on how to turn farm wastes into beneficial and income-earning materials.
