My grandfather, a true-blooded farmer, used to tell us that in preparing the land for planting, one has to be patient and must never rush things.
After the first plowing, the upturned soil is left for about one week to settle before it is plowed again.
Then, the soil is pulverized using a Carabao-pulled “Karas,” a locally-designed soil pulverizer before planting is done.
Lately, I found out that there was science in what my grandfather told us, a discovery made after several failures in our initial Sorghum and Soybeans farming.
By allowing the soil to settle, the seeds of grass and weeds in the soil which will sprout during the period will be killed by the second plowing and pulverization.
In view of this experience, I have come up with this land preparation protocol:
1. Day 1 – Deep Plowing using a Disc Plow to upturn the soil and bury the weeds;
2. Day 7 – Disc Harrow to pulverize the huge chunks of upturned soil;
3. Day 10 – Second Disc Harrow followed by Soil Pulverizing using a Rotavator;
4. Day 11-12 – Furrowing and planting.
5. Day 15-16 – Pre-Emergence Herbicide.
To make sure that the seeds of the weeds surrounding the farm will not be blow into the field where these could grow, it is recommended the contact and systemic herbicide is sprayed on the periphery of the plantation.
With this land preparation and weed control protocol, our Sorghum and Soybeans will have a lead time of about 30 days to grow without being bothered by weeds.
