Early today, my Kuya Pat, a retired police superintendent and poultry enthusiast, brought to my farm a strange-looking black chicken known among breeders as the Rolls Royce of all chicken breeds.
The black chicken is called Ayam Cemani, a very rare Indonesian poultry breed which could sell for as much as $5,000 per head.
It is completely black from feet to beak. Even the eyes, the crown and the wattles are black.
Ayam Cemani is considered a sacred breed of chicken in Indonesia and for ages, attempts to bring out the breed from the country failed.
I don’t know how they were able to.bring out of Indonesia breeding materials of Ayam Cemani but a few years ago, I heard that several American breeders already had it in their farms.
One of those breeders is April Howington of Texas, one of the outstanding poultry raisers in America.
My brother, Pat, and I were able to befriend April Howington through common friends and when she learned that I and my brother are deeply fascinated with rare poultry breeds, she first send us Ameraucanas, the Easter Egg Layers which produce blue eggs.
A few days ago, she shipped two pairs of Ayam Cemani – two roosters and two hens.
Unfortunately, the two hens died during transport and so what Kuya Pat and I received were two roosters, one for each of us.
As I held my Ayam Cemani rooster yesterday, I almost could not believe that I would own one if this rare breed.
Thank you very much april howington and don’t worry, even without an Ayam Cemani hen, I could breed a 30/32 Ayam Cemani out.of this rooster you sent.
By the way, I already have a lot of Ameraucana chicks from the 4 pullets and a stag you sent me.
(In my hands is the Ayam Cemani rooster while in the pen are the blue egg-laying Ameraucanas, all of which came from April Howington.)
