There is more to Sorghum, the world’s 5th most important grain, that just a source of protein for livestock, poultry and Aqua feeds.
In fact, Sorghum known for its tolerance to droughts retains its green leaves and stalks at harvest, making it ideal for silage making.
One hectare of Sorghum could produce at least 30 to 40 tons of silage which would be enough to feed 20 heads of cattle for one year.
The grains could also be flaked and fed to cattle fatteners along with corn.
Sorghum is also the preferred medium of cultured mushroom farmers.
While it has not yet reached the level of corn in acceptability among feed millers, Sorghum is expected to be an important crop in the attainment of Food Sufficiency and Security in the country.
