Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay – Meeting with fisheries stakeholders in this town today, I was confronted with an unusual problem – a weed which creeps into hundreds of hectares of fishponds threatening the industry.
Former mayor and now Councilor Nonoy Chu, a fishpond operator, said the weed which appeared 5 years ago had invaded the fishponds preventing them from growing Bangus.
They call it “Bakwit” and it has survived all herbicides, including the potent Glyphosate.
When checked with Plant Doctor, it appeared like Pholiurus pannonicus, found in Austria and Kazakhstan.
How it arrived in Zambo Sibugay is a mystery.
But the more urgent problem that we need to address is how to control it.
