DA LAUNCHES REGIONAL SRP,
TIENDA MALASAKIT STORE NOV. 9
By Manny Piñol
The Suggested Retail Price (SRP) Program for Rice covering areas outside Metro Manila will be launched by the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the National Food Authority (NFA) on Nov. 9 in Ormoc City, Leyte.
On the same date, the DA will also start the nationwide implementation of the DA TienDA Malasakit Store Program which would connect farmers and fishermen directly with the consumers.
Former Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go, who proposed the staging of the DA TienDA Malasakit Store in Ormoc before he resigned to run for the Senate, is expected to be present during the twin event.
The NFA Council will meet tomorrow afternoon in a Special Council Meeting to set the SRP for rice to be sold in areas outside Metro Manila and the Greater Manila Area.
With the launching of the Regional SRP tomorrow, prices of rice in the different parts of the country will now be set according to the milling grade – Regular Milled, Well-Milled and Premium.
Special Rice or Fancy Rice will not be covered by the SRP.
The SRP Program will also eliminate misleading brand names of rice sold in the market like “Senandomeng,” “Super Angelica,” “Double Diamond” and others.
Also on Nov. 9, the NFA, backed up by police forces, will enforce the SRP and other marketing guidelines in Metro Manila and the Greater Manila Area.
The NFA will issue warnings on violators and succeeding violations could result in the cancellation of their NFA licenses, jail terms of between four months to four years or fines of between P2,000 to P1-M.
The Ormoc DA TienDA Malasakit Store launching will mark the start of the DA-LGU engagement in opening up outlets for farmers and fishermen to be able to sell their produce directly to the consumers.
In the many DA TienDA Malasakit Store activities in Metro Manila, consumers have said that the prices of food items like rice, meat, fish and other products were greatly lower than those sold in the public markets.
Two Metro Manila LGUs – Taguig City and Muntinlupa City – are now engaged with the DA in the staging of the weekly DA TienDA Malasakit Stores.
League of City Mayors President Ed Pamintuan has written a formal letter to the DA requesting that the other city LGUs be also briefed on the DA TienDA Malasakit Store Program so they could participate.
