FARMERS, FISHERFOLK, OFFICIALS
GATHER IN MINDORO OCC. FORUM
By Manny Piñol
Rains and bad weather may have prevented me from flying to Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro yesterday but local leaders and officials of the Department of Agriculture successfully conducted the forum with farmers and fisherfolk affected by the series of tropical storms.
DA officials led by Ronie F. Panoy, Regional Technical Director for Operations of DA-MIMAROPA represented me in the forum.
Occidental Mindoro Representative Josephine Ramirez Sato, Vice Gov. Peter de Jesus Alfaro, Board Member Mcking Legaspi, Mayors Lyn Tria of Mamburao and Jesus Valdez of Rizal were present during the consultation.
Also present during the dialogue were Edgardo Payas, Provincial Officer, BFAR; Celedonio P. Pereyra, Project Evaluation Officer III, Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC;) Sofronio Baranda, OIC- OPA and Lt. Col. Mario Lito Retirva, of the Phil Army.
The forum, held at the Provincial Training Center in Mamburao, was attended by hundreds of farmers and fishermen.
I was actually all set to fly using two helicopters – one an Air Force Bell and the other a Raven II – when a weather advisory said that rains and dark skies made the trip very risky.
I intend to push through with the trip to Mamburao next week and pass by Oriental Mindoro to turn over to a group of Mangyan tribesmen 15 heads of carabao which I promised last year.
Thank you to the DA officials for handling the event well in spite of my absence and to the local political leaders for helping us facilitate the forum.
