Inspired in Gensan! Fish-Rich Zambo Sibugay Wants To Build Fish Port

Officials of fish-rich Zamboanga Sibugay led by the Vice Governor, Rey Olegario, 12 Board Members and four mayors, today said they would like to build a Fish Center in the province to boost their Aqua-Marine Industry and create job opportunities.
During a visit to the General Santos City Fish Port today, the officials were awed upon learning that about 12,000 people work in the Fish Port daily while another 70,000 are employed by eight major canneries.
Phil. Fishports Development Authority supervisor Jovy Garrido said thousands of families also generate income from activities related to the fish port operations.
The mayors of Olutanga Island – Arthur Ruste of Olutanga, Edreluisa Caloñge of Mabuhay and Orlando Ramiso of Talusan – are preparing to develop a huge mariculture park in the island.
The mariculture park will raise Groupers in underwater fish cages, lobsters and other high value fish.
They said a Fish Center to consolidate their produce would provide access to the market and income opportunities.
The officials of Zamboanga Sibugay, including Mayor Eric Palma of Diplahan, are on the second day of their journey outside the province to discover best practices in governance which could be replicated in their areas.
