It feels so good to wake to a new morning in the farm seeing photos of newly-harvested Ilocos Garlic in Alamada, Cotabato.
The first sizable harvest of at least 50 kilos of Ilocos Garlic was made in the trial plots of couple Jonjon and Inday Miranda in Sitio Dulao, Dado, Alamada at 550-meters above sea level (MASL).
The Miranda couple partnered with VetMate Farma Corp.owned by my friend, German Panghulan of Batangas and Braveheart Farms which I own in the Garlic trials program.
VetMate Farm Corp. brought to Cotabato a team of Ilocano farmers from San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte who are experts in Garlic farming to teach locals on how to plant Garlic.
With this development, it has been proven that we could grow Garlic in Mindanao.
With the vast areas we have, farmers in Mindanao could now start massive production of the highly-in-demand Garlic variety which is preferred over the tasteless Garlic from abroad.
Now, that the private sector has shown and proven that we could grow and produce Garlic, the ball is in the court of government.
It is now time for the Department of Agriculture (DA) to reassess the practice of giving tens of millions of research funds to several institutions to conduct Garlic propagation studies which hardly yielded any positive results.
Those funds are better used in procuring planting materials which could be distributed to Cotabato and Mindanao farmers.
Hindi na tayo kailangan pa mag-import ng bawang at matitigil na rin ang smuggling.
