The introduction of the new Filipino poultry breed “Manok PNoy” has led many poultry enthusiasts to ask whether this chicken actually is just either the French Sasso or the Israeli Kabir renamed.
I have to make this clarification that the new breed of poultry chicken that I have featured in my facebook page is actually a new blending and is not related to either Sasso or Kabir.
I know Kabir and Sasso. In fact, when I was Mayor of M’lang, I promoted Kabir as part of the livelihood program in my town and later on in the province of North Cotabato.
Both breeds did not really earn the fancy of chicken meat lovers because they resemble the broiler chicken very much in terms of meat texture.
The muscle strands are also short just like the 45-day broiler chicken and this could be the reason why even the barbecue outlets did not really offer them.
Understandably so. If they used either Kabir or Sasso to be passed off as native chicken barbecue, they will have to explain why the body is paunchy.
Kabir and Sasso could also grow to gigantic proportions, weighing as much as 4 to 5 kilos in some instances.
This is what makes the ‘Manok PNoy‘ distinct.
A full grown ‘Manok PNoy’ male would only grow to as much as 2.6 kilos while the female would only be about 2 kilos.
This is very much like the native chicken.
Also, the muscle strands are long and the body is not paunchy, rather leaner than Kabir and Sasso.
Most of all, as the “Taste Testers” have testified, the meat of a 3-month-old ‘Manok PNoy’ is juicier and tastes really like the native chicken.
Perhaps in due time, when I have successfully set ‘Manok PNoy’ as a distinct poultry strain, it will become the better option for the smaller and leaner ‘nitib’ chicken.
Let me repeat, this new chicken breed, as the name suggests, is proudly a product of Filipino ingenuity and creativity.
