Experts in Jackfruit propagation from the Eastern Visayas Agricultural Research Center (EVIARC) in Abuyog, Leyte will conduct an on-site workshop on Jackfruit propagation, especially scion preparation and grafting, in my farm in Kidapawan City July 5 and 6.
This is part of my personal advocacy to encourage our farmers to plant the EVIARC Sweet variety of Jackfruit, known as one of the sweetest in the country.
After the training, I will share free scions for grafting.
There is no registration or training fee. Just bring your own food.
Also yesterday during the Management Committee Meeting of the Department of Agriculture in Gen. Santos City, I asked all the regional directors to establish clonal gardens of the EVIARC Sweet in each region all over the country.
The clonal gardens will become the source of scions for grafting to be shared with our farmers.
Jackfruit is a fruit tree which is endemic to Asia and could be grown easily.
The government, however, failed to focus on this commodity which is eaten as raw fruit and also used for “Turon” and ice cream making.
Today, the Philippines imports P500-M worth of “langka” from Vietnam for food processing.
