In two months, I will start harvesting the pods of over 700 hills of Pigeon Peas, locally known as ‘Kadyos’ or ‘Kardis,’ a plant endemic to Asia and Africa with very high crude protein content.
‘Kadyos’ (sn: Cajanus cajan) has a 22% CP and is being eyed as a possible option to the expensive Soybeans in feed formulation for Poultry, Hogs and Aquaculture.
The 700 “Kadyos” were planted in April this year and at 4 months, these are starting to show signs of flowering.
It was Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French who suggested the planting of “Kadyos” as an alternative to Soybeans as protein source for feeds.
Soybean meal is imported mainly from North and South America and its unpredictable price has pushed prices of animal and fish feeds up.
Rocky French, an aquaculturist who came home to help me in the Food Sufficiency Advocacy, said for Philippine poultry, livestock and farmed fish to be competitive, the cost of feeds must be lowered.
He said this could only happen when the components are sourced locally and produced by Filipino farmers.
