Following a successful seed germination test conducted over the weekend, the second cycle of our Sorghum production starts this week in Alamada and Mlang, North Cotabato.
Using Sorghum Bicolor seeds from our partner Scott Seed Company of Hereford, Texas, we target 200 hectares monthly for the next 4 months.
The areas to be planted are owned by individual farmers engaged by our young company, Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc., (SAAVI) in a partnership farming scheme where we provide the seeds and technical support.
The partnership farming scheme assures the farmer/landowner of a ready market and guaranteed buying price under a Buy-Back Scheme.
The farmers are also taught how to prepare Sorghum silage which they could use in feeding Cattle and Goats.
Sorghum is a versatile and sturdy crop which could complement the country’s Corn Production needed for poultry and livestock feeds.
It is a more resilient crop as it could withstand long dry spells, needing only 25% of the water requirements of Corn.
With one seeding, the farmer could harvest three times because Sorghum grows tillers when the stalks are cut to ground level.
Sorghum production is expected to be implemented nationwide next year as the Department of Agriculture has included it in the National Corn and Feed Grains Program.
