Early tomorrow, we will launch in Barangay Rangayen, Alamada, North Cotabato a Farmers’ Learning Center for the propagation of two very important commodities for the poultry and livestock industry – Soybeans and Sorghum.
The Soybeans and Sorghum Learning Centers will be supervised by the Bureau of Plant Industry of the Dept. of Agriculture, upon my request, so that the agency will be able to document all of the activities – from planting to fertilization, weed and pest control and harvest and post-harvest.
The purpose of the documentation is to establish protocols in growing Soybeans and Sorghum in Central Mindanao which would help guide farmers who will participate in the program later on.
When I started the Soybeans and the Sorghum Programs, I just relied on what I had read in the journals and my limited exposure to both crops in undertaking the propagation which resulted in several challenges which reduced our yield.
This is something that I would like to avoid happening to other farmers who may not be able to absorb the initial losses in production because of insufficient knowledge on how to grow the crops.
The area where the Learning Centers will be located is owned by the Iranun Butig Clan represented by the son of Sultan Pacasim Butig, Municipal Councilor Sanny Butig Pamli-lian.
Alamada town mayor Jesus “Susing” Sacdalan will be present during the launching because I have chosen Alamada town for the second phase of my Soybeans Program and the Sorghum Program of the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures Inc.
Alamada and the nearby towns of Banisilan, Wao in Lanao del Sur, Libungan and Carmen are traditional corn farming areas but farmers had complained lately about the high cost of seeds, the huge capital needed for inputs and the unstable price.
The Soybeans and Sorghum Production Programs which I am pushing offers seeds on a plant-now-pay-later scheme, technical assistance and a marketing agreement which assures farmers of a fixed price for their produce.
On the third phase of the programs, we will expand to other towns of the province including the nearby provinces of Lanao del Sur, Bukidnon, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.
After that, the program is expected to cover the rest of Mindanao.
