Even at my age, I still learn new farming lessons everyday, the most recent of which is the need for a thorough land preparation before planting.
A well-prepared field means less problems of weeds and available moisture deep in the ground to allow deep root penetration.
Actually, I knew some of these when I was a young boy growing in the farm but the urge to do things fast made me overlook them.
Today, it is our standard practice that fields planted to Sorghum and Soybeans are disc plowed first, harrowed twice and then pulverized using a rotavator.
The soil is allowed to settle for a week, just enough time for the emergence of weeds.
The field is then sprayed with herbicide to prevent the weeds from catching up with the crops.
Of course, learning this lesson did not come easy.
