With a little over a month before we see the golden grains in our upland rice demo farm, alarm bells were sounded today, Day 74, after a slight discoloration in the leaves was noticed.
Our rice consultant, Nathanael Fabila, said that the yellow to brown leaves noticed in the field could indicate leaf blight.
Although it is not a serious problem and could be addressed easily, the leaf disease if left unattended could reduce the yield.
The lesson learned today is that the farmer must have keen eyes to spot changes in the appearance of his crops.
He must consider his farm as a field office where he must be present every day.
More than that he must implement corrective measures right away.
Failure to do that could spell disaster.
