LGUs Should Serve As Marketing Agency

Taking an early morning walk in the farm today, I felt sad seeing the fruits of my Longkong Lanzones still hanging from the branches almost overripe.
The group which bought my Lanzones seems not so eager to harvest the fruits because of the lack of market and very low prices.
This is a recurring problem which farmers face every fruiting season from August to October.
When I was Governor of North Cotabato, I was able to engage SM Megamall and SM Cebu City and held a series of Cotabato Fruit Festivals.
As Agriculture Secretary, I initiated the DA Tienda which marketed not only fruits but also vegetables and fisheries products.
Moving to the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) mid-2019, I organized the MinDA Fruit Festival in Baguio City where in just a matter of 3 to 4 hours, all fruits were wiped out.
These are marketing models which could be copied by Local Government Units.
Establishing marketing outlets in the big cities for the products of farmers to include fruits and others is an innovation in governance which could be implemented by local government units for a sustainable marketing strategy.
