Mahal ang abono? Solution To Farmers’ Woes: Seaweeds, ‘Kuhol’ Fertilizer

A Filipino-American farmer-scientist is now working on a blend of Seaweeds drippings and nitrates produced by snails fed with Moringa leaves to produce a natural liquid fertilizer with quantified elements for effective plant nutrition.
French, a grandson of an American soldier from Kentucky who fought in the Spanish-American war and settled in Passi, Iloilo, studied snails or Golden Kuhol for 36 years.
He discovered that by feeding a colony of Golden Kuhol in a water-filled tub with the amino acid and protein-rich Malunggay leaves, the animals produce ammonia which turns into nitrates, the natural form of the commercial “Urea.”
French first revealed the results of his experiments to me during my visit in his farm in October.
I returned to Coachella Valley, Southern California two weeks ago to ask French to conduct a study on how to mix the natural nitrates produced by the Golden Kuhol with the drippings of Seaweeds.
“This is a perfect combination but we have to conduct a laboratory analysis to formulate a natural fertilizer from Seaweeds drippings and nitrates from “Golden Kuhol” so that we could measure the nutrients that it contains,” he said.
French said that when the nutrients in the Seaweeds-Nitrates fertilizer are measured, it would be easy for the farmers to determine how much would be applied in his field.
With the help of agricultural laboratories in the vast agricultural areas of Southern California, French said he would be able to complete the study by early January 2022.
By January, he said he would be ready to share the formulation to Filipino farmers who are now feeling the pinch of high prices of commercial fertilizer which could affect food production in the country.
