Soybeans, a highly imported commodity needed by both the food and feed industry in the country, is now being grown using Organic Farming inputs in Central Mindanao.
This is considered a major breakthrough for this neglected agricultural product which the country imports heavily, almost 100%, using up over $2-B in foreign reserves every year.
The Organic Soybeans Farming Program is being initiated by a group of farmers led by former National Organic Agriculture Board (NOAB) director Renato dela Cruz in South Cotabato in partnership with Vetmate Farma Corp. and the Braveheart Farms and Nursery.
Under the partnership agreement, VetMate and Braveheart Farms will provide Atong dela Cruz and his group with the seeds of the white Soybeans as part of a Seed Production Program.
All production will be bought back by VetMate and Braveheart Farms for an expansion program which aims to hit 500,000 hectares by 2025.
Late last year, Atong dela Cruz and his group received seeds of the Non.GMO Manchuria White Soybeans seeds good for 15 hectares.
The seeds were planted in the plains of South Cotabato using Organic inputs which included a root growth enhancer, rhizobium, organic fertilizer and even organic pesticide.
On Monday, I visited the trial farm of Atong and his group and saw evidence of how effective hhis Organic Soybeans Farming Protocols are.
This is a very significant development because not only will these new Organic Farming Protocols bring down the cost of proaction, it would also cater to the needs of a highly health-conscious consumer groups.
The Organic Soybeans Production program will be expanded to 50 hectares this month with additional Soybeans Seeds provided to Atong dela Cruz and his group.
In other parts of Central Mindanao, VetMate and Braveheart Farms will continue its protocols using a combination of Organic and Inorganic farm inputs.
The Organic Soybeans Production program will cater mainly to the Soya requirements of the food industry while the regular Soybeans farming protocols will produce industrial Soya for the aqua, poultry and livestock industry.
