Hereford, Texas – A quick one day trip to Texas which ended today could yet mark the beginning of a historic transformation for Philippine Agriculture.
In the headquarters of Scott Seed Company in Hereford, Texas, hundreds of different varieties of Wheat, Barley, Triticale, Soybeans and Alfalfa were turned over to me by Scott Seed CEO Coby Kriegshauser.
These seeds will be shipped to the Philippines to start varietal trials in at least two State Universities – University of Southern Mindanao in North Cotabato and the Central Mindanao University in Bukidnon.
The participation of the Isabela State University still has to be formalized.
The varietal trials which will be supported by the Bureau of Agricultural Research of the Dept. of Agriculture will determine which among the many seeds will perform well under Philippine conditions.
All of these crops, especially Soybeans and Wheat, are heavily imported by the Philippines.
It was believed that growing these crops in the Philippines was difficult, thus the option was to import.
This was until I befriended Coby and his brother, Chad, co-owners of Scott Seed Company, a 75-year-old seed production family enterprise based in Hereford, Texas.
Last year, the Scott Seed owners came to the Philippines and met with Senator Panfilo Lacson and the officials of USM, CMU and DA-BAR.
Today’s trip to Texas finalized all agreements, including the distributorship of Scott Seed Sorghum seeds by the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures Inc., a young agricultural company formed last year.
By the end of this year, the Varietal Trial Farms will be established in the State Universities supported by DA-BAR.
The success of this project will revolutionize Philippine Agriculture and reduce our dependence on imported agricultural products.
