Even before the 40th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations could start, the Philippines already made a huge gain with the commitment by the FAO Secretary General of support for the rehabilitation of Marawi City and Lanao del Sur.
FAO Director General Jose Graziano da Silva, who led the FAO team which aided the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, made the pledge of support for Marawi City during a call the Philippine delegation made on him at noon today, June 30.
Da Silva, who visited the Philippines right after Haiyan, made the offer without even the Philippine delegation asking for it.
It was Da Silva who brought up the topic of the Marawi City conflict and said that FAO is ready to assist the Philippine Government in the rehabilitation program.
I assured him that I will relay his offer of support to President Rody Duterte and thanked him for the FAO support to the country after Haiyan.
President Duterte has already pledged a P20-B rehabilitation fund for Marawi City.
The President’s rehab fund commitment does not include the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ funds alloted for the rehabilitation of agriculture and fisheries in Marawi City and Lanao del Sur.
Following the devastation of the Central Visayas by Typhoon Haiyan, FAO was able to raise about $25-M and procured seeds for farmers.
