SORGHUM SILAGE MATERIALS
COULD HIT 50-T PER HECTARE
By Manny Piñol
The Sorghum Pilot Area which I established in my farm in Kidapawan City continues to give very encouraging numbers.
On the suggestion of a follower of this page, I and my farm workers measured how much silage material could be harvested from one hectare of Sorghum.
Using the same formula in measuring the average yield of fresh grains per hectare, I asked my farm workers to cut 14 stalks from a 1-square meter area in the Sorghum field.
The 14 stalks harvested from one square meter weighed 5.5-kilos which means that in a 10,000-sq meter, the total weight of silage to be harvested is 55-metric tons.
Sorghum stalks and leaves remain green even at maturity making these ideal for silage production.
Silage is used in feeding livestock like cattle and buffalo, including small ruminants like goats and sheep.
Yesterday, a production test showed that 1-square meter of Sorghum could produce 2.2 kilo of fresh grains in short stalks.
These grains and silage production records could make Sorghum a major factor in developing the poultry and livestock industry of the country.
