Backyard Free-Range Chicken farmers must plant at least two Betel Nuts, also known as “Bunga” (sn: Areca catechu), to have an endless supply of inexpensive and effective natural dewormers.
I learned about the secrets of the deworming power of the Betel Nut from older members of our family which had been into farming for as long as I could remember.
In fact, my late grandfather, Jose Cordero Piñol, shared many more traditional and ingenious ways of expelling intestinal worms in chicken and even large ruminants.
But the Betel Nut is the most effective.
For young chicken, we slice the meat of the young nut into 8 parts and 4 parts for older chicken.
Each chicken is given a slice orally, a laborious process but nevertheless very beneficial to the farmer because he does not have to buy synthetic dewormers.
It is so effective that in less than 10 minutes, the worms, pin worms, tape worms and round worms, would be expelled by the chicken.
More than its efficacy, the Betel Nut offers an inexpensive source of dewormers for the poor farming families.
I have propagated over 200 Betel Nuts in my nursery and since I will only plant about 100 in the periphery of my farm, I could share at least 100 to other backyard chicken farmers at very affordable cost.
