Never-ending search! FilAm Farmer-Scientist Eyes ‘Kadyos’ As Protein Source

The search for alternative sources of protein for Aqua and Animal Feed Formulation took another positive turn yesterday after Filipino-American Farmer-Scientist Rocky French identified the iconic “Kadyos” beans (sn Cajanus cajan) as a potential protein source.
While checking on a locally-fabricated feed milling equipment supplied by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte yesterday, French spotted several Kadyos shrubs in the area.
French immediately pointed out the shrubs whose beans are used in the Ilonggo favorite dish KBL (for Kadyos, Baboy, Langka) as a plant which could be used as potential substitute for the very expensive imported soybean meal which is the main protein source in animal and aqua feed formulation.
He recommended the planting of Kadyos as an alternative to expensive and imported protein sources to ensure a steady supply of afforable feeds for Aquaculture and Fisheries.
French is now helping me in formulating an Aqua Feeds which uses largely locally available materials, except for some micro-minerals which are imported.
The first Aqua Feeds and Free-Range Poultry Feeds formulated by French are now being field-tested.
French, a grandson of an American soldier from Kentucky who remained in the Philippines and married a Filipino after the Spanish-American War, believes that there are enough local materials in making Aqua and Animal Feeds.
Aside from Kadyos, he had earlier identified powdered Malunggay leaves, Mungbeans or Mongo and Cassava as additional materials for the formulation of local feeds.
