The introduction of Sorghum, the third most important grains for human and animal consumption, could give birth to at least two allied industries – Dairy Goat farming and Cattle Fattening.
In the short visit that I and Fil-Am farmer/scientist Rocky French made yesterday in the town of Sual, along with Senator Panfilo Lacson and businessman Benjie Go who owns agricultural lands in the area, we were able to immediately project the impact of the introduction of Sorghum in the province.
Sorghum could open up new income opportunities for farmers and business entrepreneurs in the town and later on, the whole province.
For a first class province and among the richest in the country, Pangasinan agriculture sorely lacks irrigation facilities and in many of the areas, farmers could only harvest palay, the main crop, once a year.
During the rest of the year, farmers either plant rotational crops from which they do not earn much or let the land lay idle until the next rice planting season.
Sorghum could be a rotational crop to be planted after rice is harvested even without tilling the rice paddies and allowed to produce grains for two harvests.
This would produce enough feed grains to support the feed mills in the area producing Aqua Feeds and yield enough silage to support the development of Dairy Goat Farming and Cattle Fattening.
Initially, we will be developing a 6-hectare area owned by Benjie Go to serve as the pilot farm for the introduction of three Sorghum varieties supplied by the Scott Seed Company of Hereford, Texas.
In the next planting season, an estimated 2,000 hectares, at 500 hectares monthly, will be planted to Sorghum initially in Sual and later in other parts of Western Pangasinan.
This is a classic example of how new farming technology could boost agricultural production and change the lives of people in a community.
