Tomorrow, I will introduce to the farmers of Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur and the neighboring areas a new crop, Sorghum.
Sorghum farming will be one of the topics in the Farmers’ and Fishermen’s Forum in Dumalinao scheduled tomorrow at 8 a.m.
Other topics would include Sorghum Silage Making, Upland Rice Farming, Fish Cage Farming and Vanamei or White Shrimps Production.
Sorghum, a grains crop promoted by the small company which I, Sen. Ping Lacson and a few friends organized last year, Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc.is being introduced in Zamboanga del Sur through the efforts of Mayor Junaflor “Sweet” Cerilles of Dumalinao.
Mayor Cerilles, who had been following my posts on Facebook, reached out to Cebu-based journalist Salven Lagumbay to be able to link up with me.
Sorghum farming will be a totally new experience for farmers of Zamboanga del Sur mainly because this will be the first time that they will be assured of a market with a guaranteed price from SAAV Inc.
Also, Sorghum will give farmers three harvests with just one planting because it grows ratoons.
It will also provide farmers additional income through silage production using the stalks and leaves of Sorghum which remain green even at harvest.
The forum on Sorghum farming will be held at the Dumalinao Municipal Hall at 8 a.m. tomorrow, Oct. 14.
