Kalabasa farmers of Alamada, North Cotabato who suffered heavy losses after the buying price dropped from P30 to P2 per kilo are now shifting to two new crops with a ready buyer – Sorghum and Soybeans.
With seeds, tractor services and fertilizer offered to them on a Plant-Now-Pay-Later Program, farmers hope to be able to recoup their losses from Kalabasa.
Yesterday, I checked for the third time the vast fertile fields in Campo 11, Rangayen, Alamada and saw Kalabasa farmers gathering whatever Squash is left before my tractors will rip the fields and prepare the area for planting.
Since my Soybeans seeds are limited to cover only about 50 hectares, most of the areas will be planted to Sorghum.
Unlike the price of Kalabasa which is unpredictable, Sorghum grains will be bought by the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc. at a fixed price.
SAAV Inc. is a young agricultural company which I, former Senator Ping Lacson and several friends formed last year.
The company provides the Sorghum seeds and buys back the produce.
The same is true with Soybeans, a crop which I am personally promoting with a guaranteed buy-back.
With favorable climate, I hope to be able to cover a large area for Sorghum which has a maturity period of 105 days.
