The Department of Agriculture will revive the Sorghum Program in 2025 six years after it was scuttled by former Agriculture officials in 2019..
DA Undersecretary for Livestock Deogracias Victor “DV” Savellano said Sorghum will be an important component of the Livestock and Poultry Program of government.
Usec. Savellano visited Kidapawan City to check on the progress of the Sorghum Program being implemented by the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc. (SAAVI) and the Soybeans Project of Braveheart Farms and Vetmate Farma Corp.
He expressed dismay that the Sorghum Program which underwent field trials in 2018 when I was Secretary of Agriculture and allocated a P100-M budget in 2019 for national implementation was scuttled by former Secretary William Dar.
“Dapat ang laki na ng area natin sa Sorghum Program at hindi na mayo nahihirapan sa feed grains and silage production,” Usec. Savellano, who is also a goat raiser like me, said.
He said that he will recommend to Sec. Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. that the Sorghum Program, along with Corn and other feed grains, will be placed under the Livestock and Poultry Program.
“These are inseparable components for a successful livestock and poultry program,” Usec. Savellano said.
He visited the Sorghum farm in Luvimin, Kidapawan City and the Sorghum Debearding Operations in San Vicente, Makilala yesterday.
