DA BIYAHENG BUKID VISITS
ISOLATED JIPAPAD, SAMAR
By Manny Piñol
The Department of Agriculture, including the National Food Authority, will take a four-hour trip tomorrow from Tacloban City to the isolated town of Jipapad, Eastern Samar which suffered food shortage after Typhoon Samuel ravaged through Eastern Visayas.
The NFA will deliver government-subsidized rice while the DA will provide immediate interventions using its Quick Reaction Fund (QRF).
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) had earlier delivered food packs to the residents of the 5th class municipality which was one of the hardest hit by Typhoon Samuel.
DA Region VIII Acting Director Andrew Orais has been directed to make arrangements with other agencies of government to ensure that the DA contingent reaches the area tomorrow.
Jipapad and other interior towns of Samar Island are known to be strongholds of the communist New People’s Army.
In previous disaster intervention efforts of government, however, the NPA were known to have allowed calamity assistance to be delivered.
The food shortage is Jipapad came to my attention following media reports that the town had ran out of food supplies.
The report was confirmed by local validation efforts this weekend, prompting the DA to decide to proceed to the area to provide interventions.
