Coming down from Arakan Valley in Cotabato after an engagement in Antipas town today, I dropped by the home of a fellow fruit farmer and former Mayor Mario Calayco of Pres. Roxas.
I was surprised to be greeted by boxes of off-season Longkong Lanzones, along with Durian and Mangosteen.
Mario always had a green thumb for fruit trees.
I acquired the first Longkong Lanzones seedlings which I planted in my farm 28 years ago from him, along with my first “Buko Pandan.”
Mario introduced new varieties of Rambutan and other fruit trees to Cotabato Province.
While he no longer goes to his farm as often as he used to because of the twice-weekly dialysis sessions, he makes sure that his friends get the first taste of his harvest.
Next month, makeshift stalls will again mushroom along the highway in Kidapawan and Makilala as the season of fruits begins.
