Once a farmer …! Let’s Plant High-Value Trees In Deforested Upland Areas Once a farmer, always a farmer!

Whatever would be the outcome of my quest to represent the Agriculture and Fisheries Sector in the Philippine Senate, one thing is certain – I would continue to be a farmer.
In fact, before I left Cotabato to fly to Manila yesterday for the filing of my Certificate of Candidacy on Friday, Oct. 8, I visited my farm nursery for the last time knowing that I would not be able to watch my seedlings grow for a few months.
I have long advocated for a practical approach in re-greening our denuded highlands, especially the vast Ancestral Domain Areas of the country, by introducing the planting of high-value fruit trees, bamboo and industrial trees as well.
One of the greatest setbacks in the National Greening Program of the country is the mindset that all that is needed is just plant trees for environmental protection.
While it is a noble objective, it is not a very practical approach in an effective re-greening program.
There has to be economic returns for those who plant trees for the program to be successful which is the reason why I am advocating the planting of the EVIARC Sweet Jackfruit and Avocado, especially the commercial Hass Variety, at very high elevations in Mindanao.
This advocacy will not bear immediate results as it would take a few years for these trees to yield fruits but just the same we have to continue the advocacy now.
So, let the May 2022 Elections come.
Whatever happens, I will still be a happy farmer.
