FOR SORGHUM PRODUCTION
By Manny Piñol
The Department of Agriculture (DA) will officially launch its Sorghum Development Program on Saturday, Nov. 10, with the opening of Pilot Farms in the different regions of the country.
A ceremonial planting in a 4-hectare area in San Vicente, Makilala, North Cotabato will be held after a half-day lecture on Sorghum Farming to be conducted by experts.
The half-day lecture activity will also include a presentation on silage-making using Sorghum stalks and Mushroom culture using Sorghum as medium.
Early in the morning of Nov. 10, DA Regional Directors and leaders of the Indigenous People, who will be the first beneficiaries of the program, will participate in the harvest of the Sorghum I planted in my farm in Kidapawan City.
Each Regional Director will be tasked to develop a Pilot Farm to determine the suitability of Sorghum in their respective areas.
Sorghum, an African grass which produces protein-rich grains ideal for livestock and poultry feeds, is being re-introduced by the DA to complement its Corn Production Program to support a fast-growing poultry and livestock industry.
Ranked 5th among the world’s grains producing crops, Sorghum could also be used as human food source.
Already, big feed millers, including CP of Thailand, have expressed interest in entering into supply agreements with Sorghum farmers.
An initial 300 hectares, mainly in Ancestral Domain Areas of the IPs,will be planted to Sorghum this year.
