We join in grief the families of the six Army soldiers and the four civilians who perished in two bombing incidents perpetrated by alleged extremists in Jolo, Sulu today.
Personally, this incident pains me because one of the young soldiers killed comes from my hometown, Mlang and his parents are known to me.
This twin-bombing incident is like a knife thrust into our hearts and sets back our dream of a peaceful and secure Mindanao.
We join the leaders and people of Sulu in condemning this senseless act.
As Chairman of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) which oversees Mindanao affairs, I also urge our government leaders to take a closer look into the problems of Jolo, Sulu which give rise to violent incidents like this.
There is a need for us to review our strategies and approaches in addressing the problems in Sulu which as of today is the remaining troubled spot in Mindanao.
I was in Jolo right after a big fire gutted thousands of shanties in February this year and I sensed a tense and uneasy atmosphere.
There is something wrong in Sulu and we have to know what it is.
By now, it is evident that a military solution alone will not work. Our soldiers could win small battles but we are not winning the war.
We cannot leave Sulu behind as we steer Mindanao towards a peaceful and progressive future.
Together, we have to help and save Sulu from the misguided elements who would like to ruin it.
