Arriving in Mindanao today after a week-long trip to Papua New Guinea, Rocky French and I went straight to our Sorghum Fields in Polomolok, South Cotabato.
I was excited to check the growth of the Sorghum seeds we planted in the DARBC Pineapple Farm using a Mechanical Seeder.
This is the first 15-hectares in the DARBC Farm where we used a Mechanical Seeder.
Previously, we sowed Sorghum seeds using Agricultural Drones.
While Agri Drone seeding was fast, we encountered problems with low germination and weeds.
The result was very low yield prompting us to shift back to Seeding using a tractor-towed Mechanical Seeder which applied basal fertilizer at the same time.
One month after the seeding using Mechanical Seeder, I was pleased with what I saw.
So, in the meantime, the Agri Drones will only be used for spraying insecticides and foliar fertilizer.
But given the fast technological advancement, I am sure that a better drone model which would be more efficient and effective in sowing seeds would soon be developed.
