When Rocky French and I decided to try growing Alfalfa in an experimental farm in Talakag, Bukidnon, we did not only think of feeds for the large and small ruminants sector but also the growing Rabbitry sector in the country.
Alfalfa, along with Timothy Hay, had been identified as one of the best feeds for Rabbits, especially for the young ones up to 4 to 5 months old.
When I posted the picture of the lush Alfalfa which we sowed in Talakag over a month ago, a follower of this page, Ronald Tavita, commented that the project could boost this new industry which is gaining a huge following, especially among young farmers.
Rabbit meat had earlier been promoted by the Department of Agriculture as an alternative source of meat protein at 33% but it fell short of undertaking a program to support the feed requirements.
Hopefully, within the next three months, through the young corporation which I, former Senator Panfilo Lacson, Rocky and four other friends have organized, our village-level feed mill in Kidapawan City will be able to start the trials of the first locally produced pelletized Rabbit feeds.
