Planting the Original Sweet Aromatic or Buko Pandan seedlings in areas near tourism destinations could be the wisest investment for farming families, especially young farmers.
Tourists have always associated coconut with the Philippines and rightly so because we are the second biggest producer of Coconut in the world.
But while we are known as a coconut country, our coconut farmers are among the poorest because they have focused mainly on varieties for Copra production.
In contrast, in Thailand which is only #9 in the list of Top Coconut Producers, farmers are raking in profits because they produce green coconuts which are now sold in Disneyland with earnings 10 times higher than the Copra farmers.
I am not suggesting that we should abandon industrial coconut which is now planted in over 3.5-million hectares.
Instead, we should encourage our farmers to plant early maturing and high value coconut varieties with a niche market to generate more income.
