Planting Sorghum!

In my posts on Sorghum farming, I had been asked repeatedly if the grains harvested from Hybrid Sorghum could be used as seeds and replanted.
The answer is Yes, Hybrid Sorghum grains when used as seeds for second generation planting would grow and produce grains.
However, there is a big “But.”
The F2 or Second Generation will not be as vigorous as the Hybrid, the grains head will be smaller and the stalks will be shorter.
As shown in the photos attached to this article, the first photo shows a Hybrid Grains head which is bigger and longer.
The second photo shows an F2 and the grains are less and the grains head is shorter.
Effectively, the production using the F2 is 50% less than the Hybrid Seeds.
It is simply a principle of Closed or Programmed Pollination to produce hybrids out of identified parents versus Open Pollination which does not use selected and identifiable parents.
The same principle holds true in animal and poultry breeding.
Hybrids possess the vigor and better quality.
I should know because I tried it.
