DA PROMOTES SORGHUM
AS ANIMAL FEED MATERIAL
By Manny Piñol
The Department of Agriculture (DA) is promoting the planting of Sorghum, also known as Milo, as an alternative to corn for animal feeds.
During a recent meeting of Livestock and Poultry Industry stakeholders, feed millers said they were interested in the development of Sorghum as alternative to corn.
The feed millers said the supply of yellow corn has been very tight and high prices have pushed the prices of meat and poultry up.
The situation was made worse by the devastation of the corn fields in Northern Luzon.
The feed millers said they are willing to enter into a marketing and supply agreement with the farmers.
Sorghum is classified as grass which produces protein-rich grains.
Unlike corn which is harvested only once, Sorghum could go through two ratoons, thus saving the farmers a lot in expenses for seeds.
The current price of sorghum seeds is P5,600 per bag which is good for two hectares.
It has been introduced in the country many years ago but it did not receive the needed push from government.
Recently, I bought Sorghum seeds from Allied Botanicals and planted these in my farm in Kidapawan City.
I am posting here the photos of my sorghum and the scenery convinces me that Sorghum farming could be profitable.
