Almost 15 years after I developed a breed of free-range chicken named “Manok Pinoy,” which is actually a cross of Oriental and Western breeds, I am now starting another genetic experiment which aims to produce a new Goat Hybrid.
This early, I will give it the name “Kambing Pinoy” which essentially will be a Hybrid produced by mating our Philippine native goats with the sturdy and hardy Spanish Goats.
In spite of the name Spanish Goats, this breed actually comes from the U.S. where American Goat Breeders have perpetuated the goats brought by the Spaniards to Texas in the 15th Century.
It was my Fil-Am friends who told me that Spanish Goat meat tasted very similar to our native goats’ meat which made me decide to venture into this new practical genetics experiment.
In October 2023, I made a quick trip to California to select Spanish Goat breeders from a Romanian-American goat breeder, Pavel Finelean and his American wife, Lora.
The 14 Spanish goats, along with 140 others which will be used by the Dept. of Agriculture in their Nucleus Farm, will arrive in the country later this month.
For the “Kambing Pinoy” Production Program, I will be using 14 breeders which will come from breeders in Colorado and Montana who all belong to the Spanish Goat Breeders Association of America.
For the female side, I have already acquired native does from Bangsamoro communities in Mindanao where the native goats had remained pure and the nearby provinces.
The native goats are mainly the descendants of the Kacang Goat breed from Indonesia believed to have been brought over from Borneo and Indonesia centuries ago.
These foundation stocks will be the beginning of a genetic experiment which I hope will improve the size and the meat volume of the new Philippine Goat Hybrid, “Kambing Pinoy.”
Hopefully in the near future, we will be able to share with other Filipino goat raisers a new breed of goats which would have very good tasting meat similar to our native goats but bigger and bulkier, thus more profitable to raise.
Welcome the “Kambing Pinoy!”
