Practical Farming! Farmer-Scientist Designs Manure Sludge Spreader

Last week, a young agri-entrepreneur from Davao City introduced a low-cost organic soil conditioner which he said could help rejuvenate the land.
Jonathan Suy, whose family owns one of the biggest poultry breeder farms in Mindanao which is already into complete processing and export, set up an P18-M Japanese designed facitility which turns chicken dung into solid and liquid fertilizer.
Since the farm produces one million heads of broiler every month, it turns out hundreds of tons of thermophilic wastes which when spread in his corn farms increased his yield tremendously.
He offered to share both the solid and liquid thermophilic wastes with me on the condition that my group, the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures Corp. which I formed along with former Senator Panfilo Lacson and three other friends, will sell him Sorghum for feeds production.
Malaking tulong ito sa Sorghum farming, especially with the high cost of fertilizer.
At 50 centavos per kilo, one metric ton of Jonathan’s thermophilic sludge to cover one hectare would only cost us P500.
But when I asked around for a second hand liquid fertilizer spreader, I found the cost very high – P800,000 for a small machine with limited coverage.
So, I asked my friend, Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French, who is a member of the SAAV Corp., to design and build a low-cost sludge spreader.
In four days, the locally-designed and fabricated sludge spreader was completed at a very low cost of less than P200,000.
Now, all that I need to do is to set up storage tanks near our production areas to store the sludge which will be delivered by Jonathan’s tanker trucks for free.
This week, we will be ready to spread the sludge in the site of our Sorghum demonstration farm in San Vicente, Makilala.
Next namin na mission ni Rocky is to design and build an organic fertilizer spreader kasi ang nakita ko na Toro brand of this machine costs about P700,000.
