Yesterday morning, I led my son, Bernhart Immanuel, a 3rd year VetMed student, in a farm walk to give him a better understanding of the things that I do.
Passing by a 3-year-old Betel Nut which now starts to flower, Imman was given a field lesson on how to use the young nuts as natural dewormers.
This is a lesson that he will not learn in the University of Southern Mindanao, or any other Veterinary School, where lessons are mostly based on Western poultry and livestock raising practices.
There should really be a Farm Immersion requirement for Veterinary and Agriculture students so that they will learn lessons from actual experiences.
For Imman, these lessons are a must because he will be taking over the farm operations a few years from now.
